Yemaya, Queen of the Seas
Yemayá was the first orisha (deity) of the universe. She was born when Olofi (the son of the supreme god) decided to create the world, after putting out the fire that enveloped the planet with water. The other 16 orishas of the Yoruba pantheon were born from Yemayá and Obbatalá (her partner).
The most important female orisha of the entire religion, is venerated and named differently in each place. Yemanyá, Iemanja, Donha Janaína, Lemanjá, also embodies the figure of being the virgin of sailors, the protector of the home, the goddess of fertility or the mother of fish.
